Health Coverage in a New Country — You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone.
The U.S. health coverage system is hard to understand for anyone — and it can feel impossible when you're brand new. Meet Assistance works with immigrants, refugees, students, and new lawful residents every day. We'll explain what you qualify for in plain language, help you apply, and connect you with a community navigator if needed.
Who Qualifies for What
Eligibility depends on your immigration status, your income, and your state. Here's a general picture — your advisor will confirm specifics for your situation.
Lawful permanent residents (green card holders)
Most qualify for marketplace plans with subsidies. After 5 years of residency, you may also qualify for Medicaid in many states.
Refugees, asylees, and humanitarian parolees
Generally qualify immediately for Medicaid, CHIP, and marketplace coverage with subsidies.
Visa holders (work, student, family)
Some marketplace eligibility — depends on status. Many use employer plans, student health plans, or short-term coverage.
Undocumented residents
Cannot use the federal marketplace, but many states offer community health centers that charge on a sliding scale based on income, and several states (CA, NY, IL, others) extend Medicaid-like coverage regardless of status.
Documents You May Be Asked For
- Permanent Resident Card (I-551), EAD, or visa
- Social Security Number — if you have one
- Proof of income for the household (recent pay stubs, tax return, or letter)
- Proof of address (utility bill, lease, or shelter letter)
Public Charge — What You Should Actually Know
Many immigrants worry that using health coverage will hurt their green card application. Under current federal rules (2024–2026), the only benefits counted toward public charge are long-term institutional care and cash assistance. Using Medicaid for routine care, CHIP, marketplace subsidies, or community health centers does NOT count. We'll go over this with you carefully so you can make a fully informed choice.
